Black Myth: Wukong Launcher

The Destined One searches for the Monkey King’s lost relics and fights yaoguai from Chinese mythology. Staff combat goes hand in hand with recognizing attack sequences and timing dodges. Attacks, sprinting, and evasive moves use stamina, so some needs to be saved for retreat. In a difficult fight, the hero can cast a spell, use a spirit’s attack, or take another form. Death returns him to the last shrine without losing accumulated Will or collected items. Between battles, the Destined One spends Sparks and adjusts his equipment for the next boss.

Game Features

Preparing for a hard fight comes down to several decisions, and almost all of them can be revisited before the next attempt.

• Stances and talents. Extra staff stances unlock as the game goes on, and their moves draw on the same talent points as spells and transformations. Spent points can be refunded to try a different setup before a boss.
• Spells. Immobilize pins an enemy in place and buys time for a combo, while the Crash talent adds a damage bonus to it. New spells and transformations arrive chapter by chapter.
• Choosing a spirit. Spirits come from defeated yaoguai chiefs. An equipped spirit grants an active skill and a passive bonus, so the right pick depends on the boss ahead.
• Gourd and pills. Drinks in the gourd can be swapped, and soaks such as Frost-Enduring Chrysanth give them extra properties. Pills from the Make Medicine menu only last for a while, so they are taken right before a tough stretch.
• Materials from every path. Finds from hidden caches and spoils from enemies are turned into staffs and armor. Weapons differ in stats: the Spikeshaft Staff, for example, adds 30 to maximum mana.
• Side paths. Branching trails lead to hidden areas and optional enemies. You can finish a chapter without them, but some materials and bosses will be left behind.
• Challenge after the finale. Beating the game unlocks Challenge mode at the shrines: Return of Rivals duels with three difficulty levels and Gauntlet of Legends, a series of back-to-back fights. Starting a New Cycle lets you walk the path again.
